How does a double diaphragm pump work?

Note there are two diaphragms and four check balls in most standard pumps. The diaphragms are used to draw the liquid into and push it out of the pump depending on which direction it is traveling. In standard pumps, the check balls are designed to only allow the liquid to travel through the bottom of the pump and then out the top when operating.

When the compressed air pushes one of the diaphragms out towards the liquid chamber, forcing the bottom check valve down and the top check valve up, it directly applies whatever air pressure you gave the pump onto the liquid forcing it up and out of the pump. At the same time, the other diaphragm is being drawn in creating a vacuum in the opposite pumping chamber and drawing the bottom check ball up and the top check valve down. Then the air will switch and start the cycle in the other direction, always evacuating one chamber while filling the other creating the full pump cycle.

They have an infinitely variable flow rate depending on how much air volume and pressure you give the pump. The higher the flow rate, the longer the discharge piping or thicker the fluid, the more pressure and volume you give the pump. There are standard side ported, center ported and split manifold pumps as well as UL, CSA, ATEX and FDA compliant pumps available.

What is a Double Diaphragm Pump How it works in an industrial application?

Air-operated double diaphragm (AODD) pumps utilize a 1:1 positive displacement mechanism powered by compressed air to accurately transfer a known volume of liquid from one point to another. This versatile pump technology is well-suited for a wide range of industrial and commercial applications due to the broad selection of available materials and reliable operating performance.

Ideal for handling high solids content, viscous fluids, extreme pH ranges, and dry running scenarios, AODD pumps also accommodate variable flow rates and suction lift requirements. Their inherently safe, explosion-proof design makes them an excellent choice in hazardous environments or where portability is essential.

With flow capacities ranging from 0.5 to 250 GPM and operation dependent solely on compressed air, air-operated diaphragm pumps offer a dependable and efficient solution for transferring nearly any liquid with minimal maintenance and maximum adaptability.

How does an air-operated double diaphragm pump work?

An air-operated double diaphragm pump is a pneumatic pump that uses a patented air valve. That air valve directs compressed air to either side of the pump, back and forth. As it does, it can run on regular compressed air, clean dry air, nitrogen, or even natural gas. While this switch is happening, the valve pushes compressed air behind a diaphragm. In turn, this directly applies the force to the liquid in the chamber and forces it up and out of the pump. The force that pushes one diaphragm out also pulls the other diaphragm in, as they are attached to a common center shaft. This action creates a vacuum in the opposite liquid chamber. Then, when one side is evacuating the liquid, the other side is filling up. The two sides alternating creates a flow rate, ensuring the transfer of liquids.

While one side of the pump is evacuating liquid, the other side is filling up. This process goes back and forth to create the actual liquid transfer and the subsequent flow rate required. There are four ball check valves inside a standard pump which allow the liquid to travel from the bottom suction manifold to the top discharge manifold. With this technology, you can run anywhere from a few psi or air pressure all the way up to 125 psi of pressure, depending on the flow rate and the discharge pressure required.

While the Yamada NDP pump series is widely recognized as the industry standard for air-operated double diaphragm (AODD) pumps, its versatility extends far beyond conventional applications. These pumps are also well-suited for handling more specialized and demanding media such as ultra-high purity chemicals, pharmaceuticals, alcoholic beverages, food-grade products, and fluids with higher viscosities or solid contents—up to 40% by weight. With minimal modifications, most NDP pump models can be customized to meet the specific requirements of these unique processes. Additionally, pneumatic operation makes these pumps ideal for transferring highly flammable or explosive liquids, as they are easily grounded and inherently safer due to their non-electrical, air-driven operation.
